How to prevent mold in your RV

Year after year, the approaching summer weather almost begs us to explore the outdoors. What better way to do it than with an RV! The possibilities for exploration and new sights are endless but along with the many perks that come with RV ownership, occasionally, a few unwanted issues can arise too, namely, mold.

Mold isn't picky and can invade and live inside and feed on almost anything, including the materials in your recreational vehicle. But how can you tell if your motorhome has a mold problem? And more importantly, what can you do to treat it and prevent it from happening again?

First, what exactly is mold?

Mold is a type of fungi that produces tiny microscopic spores that float through the air looking for a warm, moist environment to feed on. The bad news is that mold will eat and decompose almost any organic material including many of the materials inside your RV. The biggest indicator of a mold issue the obvious green stain that you can visually see. Another obvious sign is the unmistakable musty wet odor mold creates as it grows. Both of these issues can be the result of water pooling or condensation that can be found anywhere from the bathroom to the ventilation ducts.

I may have a mold problem, what now?

To ensure that not only is the mold issue resolved but it is protected from future growth, here are a few suggestions from the top RV pros:

Proper ventilation is key to controlling moisture inside your RV.

  1. The first step in treating current mold issues is to stop all sources of moisture that is allowing the mold to grow. This could be a leak, condensation, or humid weather trapping the moisture inside. You must completely stop the source of moisture or the mold will only return.

  1. Make sure all water damage or leaks are fixed immediately. The longer you allow the moisture to sit, the bigger the mold issue you may encounter. Be as thorough as you can to eliminate all visible signs of mold as well as hidden mold. Dry out the area completely and replace any wood or materials damaged beyond repair.

  2. Circulate the air inside your motorhome. If you keep your RV closed up without circulation, the moisture trapped inside can begin to grow mold which will deteriorate any organic materials inside the RV. This also means keeping appliances such as the refrigerator cleaned out and left open when in storage.

  3. It's much easier to keep a mold issue at bay than to remediate a bigger mold problem. Protect your RV with a mold barrier from the start.
